Hanningtons Lane’s Sophie Darling is this month’s cover artist for Viva Magazine.

We caught up with her to find out more about her luxury print label, her inspirations and opening her first Brighton store.

Tell us a little bit about the brand?

Founded in 2013, we are a Brighton made luxury print label and specialise in a biannual collection of clothing, accessories. prints and key interior pieces.

How would you describe your style?

Our signature style is an individual approach to pattern and print and its application onto simple yet stylish wardrobe classics.  Clothing and fabrics are the canvas for our designs. My background is in fine art and the style has developed over a 27 year career as a designer and artist.

Much of the collection is screen printed by hand in our Brighton studio. Use of specialist finishes and this time-honoured technique makes our work unique and recognisable.

Why was opening a Brighton store important to you and why Hanningtons Lane?

Our collaborative and localised workforce means the brand has a lower carbon footprint.  Seamstresses are hand-picked for their care and attention to detail. We pride ourselves on not using a factory, preferring to cut and make pieces one by one in Brighton.

Some customers used to visit our studio itself, but space is limited and we felt 2019 was the year to take the brand to the next level and open a stand-alone store. At 2 Hanningtons Lane we have created a space for customers to try on the clothes, see the whole collection in one place and meet the designer behind the product, right in the heart of Brighton’s famous Lanes.

Our new store enhances the personalised relationship we like to have with our buyers, offering a beautiful retail space and an experience led creative environment.

Fashion with narrative
Creativity with conscience
Individuality, versatility and workmanship

Hanningtons Lane perfectly matched our design principles – it is a really beautiful, collaborative and special place. Owners Redevco and architect Morgan Carn have ensured every shop is different and the new Lane really blends into its surroundings, as if it was always meant to be here. There is a range of quirky independents and high street stores, all offering shoppers a unique place to visit and explore.

Who is a Sophie Darling customer?

We sell to modern women, who love great design and to whom sustainability, narrative and workmanship are key.

What’s next for the brand?

We have just taken receipt of gorgeous new season prints on a sustainable Tencel fabric and we have Spring bomber and utility jackets available in our widest fabric range yet. Every one is handmade and unique. We’ll also be launching a new tailored jacket, matching trouser, dress and skirts, so watch this space!
